Hygrocybe helobia is a relatively small red waxcap with dry squamulose cap

H. helobia is in the subgenus Hygrocybe. This subgroup is characterized with regular tramacells with a size 150-500 µm. This is a good microscopic character to separate H. helobia from other similar waxcaps for example H. miniata.

Ecology/Indicatorvalue.

Pretty common in grassland and one of the first waxcaps appearing in fall. It is found both in rich and poor localities, and has probably limited indicator value.

Fructification Norway: From beginning of July to beginning of October, mainly August/September.
