Clavaria asperulospora has dark brown to black fruit bodies, narrow flattened with fine longitudinal ribs. The height varies from 3-7 cm. It can be mixed with Clavaria pullei, but this is usually more reddish and microscopically has smooth spores, while the spores of C. asperulospora are echinuate.

Ecology/Indicator value

It is found in base-rich grasslands, but and in calcareous coniferous forests.
It is very rare in Norway and only found in a few locations in Nord Trøndelag and Oppland. However, both color and size make it difficult to detect, it and it can also easily be macroscopically confused with an earthtounge.
Indicator-value is unclear due to its rare appearance.
