Hygrocybe berkeleyi was until recently (2011)considered as a subspecies of H. pratensis. It is similar to this but has completely white colors.  Relatively fleshy with decurrent gills and a dry cap. A very similar species, C. monteverde, gets black after drying, especially on the gills.

Up to 100mm. White, fleshy, dry surface. First conical, later applanate.

Deeply decurrent and distant, white to cream.

Up to 100mm thick, and attenuated downwards. White, longitudinally fibrillose.

 

Big species of H. virginea, but this has often a slightly lubricous cap.

 

Ecology/Indicatorvalue:

H. berkeleyi is more seldom than H. pratensis. It often prefers more rich localities often on calcarerous ground.  

 

Fructification in Norway: From end of August to end of October, mainly in September/October.
