Hygrocybe cantharellus is a relatively small orange to red waxcap with deeply decurrent gills. The cap is squamulose, somtimes a little bit greasy.

Mostly easily recognizable on the decurrent gills.

Grows in clusters.

Small, up to 30mm,

Young specimens conical or applanate Later "chanterelle-shaped" - funnel-shaped

Surface dry and squamulose, red-orange to yellow

Deeply decurrent also in young specimens

Pale, but later yellow-orange.

Thin, up to 60mm,

Dry, often with same color as cap.

H. miniata, but it has not decurrent gills.

H. turunda but it has a dark squamulose cap.

 

Ecology/Indicatorvalue:

H. cantharellus is quite common in pastures, and therefore has a limited indictor-value. It is found both in rich and poor localities when it comes to geology.

 

Fructification in Norway: From end of June til beginning of November, mainly in August/September.
