Neohygrocybe nitrata is a small to medium
sized waxcap with brown squamulose cap and a
lighter stem with brown/grey tinge. It has a characteristic smell of
chlorine, which makes it easy to recognize. |

Up to 70 mm. Often dark grey to brown. Dry and squamulose. Smells chlorine. |
White/greyish in distinct contrast to the cap. Distant, curved and
broadly adnate. |
Up to 60 mm, often shorter than diameter of cap. Dry, smooth
often with grey/brown shades. |
N. ingrata but this has often paler cap and has reddening flesh. Smells also chlorine. |

Ecology/Indicatorvalue: N. nitrata was before 2010 not redlisted,
but is looked upon as a good indicator for grasslands with high biodiversity
of seldom species. It grows on rich to medium rich grasslands. Fructification in
Norway: From beginning of
June to beginning of October, mainly in August/September. |
