Hygrocybe splendidissima is a large
fleshy waxcap with clear red colors, and is
probably the most beautiful of all wax caps. It has a dry cap and stem and the
stem is often compressed. It has a characteristic smell of honey especially
when it is dry. |

Fleshy up to 70mm. Clearly red, dry but often smooth and the edge can
be yellow. Varies from conical to applantae sometimes
with an umbo. Smells honey but not as clearly as H. reidii.

Narrowly adnate, curved, red-orange with paler edge. |
Up to 100 mm, often irregularly compressed/twisted. Red/Orange with yellow base. Dry, matt with silky sheen. Hollow with yellow/orange flesh.

H. punicea but it has more lubricous
and matt cap and a fibrillose stem. H. coccinea men but it has a lubricous cap and broadly adnate gills. |

Ecology/Indicatorvaue: H. splendidissima is a rather rare waxcap that grows in grasslands together with many other
rare and redlisted grasslandfungi
on so-called "hot spots". It is a good indicator of very old
and valuable grasslands.
Fructification in Norway: From end of August to medio November, mainly in October. |
