Neohygrocybe ovina is a fleshy waxcap with dark colors and a scaly cap with reddening flesh.

Characteristics:

Cap	Gills	Stem	Similar species
Fleshy up to 90mm Dry and smooth, greasy Conical later applanate Grey-brown later dark sepia-grey. Becomes often squamulose with age.	Narrowly adnate. Curved often thick. Greyish, paler than cap. Reddening flesh.	Fleshy up to 120mm Irregular cylindrical to clavate sometimes thicker in the middle. Color like cap.	Very characteristic- difficult to mix with others.

Ecology/Indicatorvalue:

N. ovina is a very rare waxcap and is only found in areas of high value. It often grows along with other rare grasslandfungi so called "hot spots". It prefers calcareous grasslands.

Fructification in Norway:  From beginning of August to beginning of October, mainly in September.
