Hygrocybe punicea is the largest waxcap. It has a dark red and lubricous to vicid cap and a fibrillose stem, not hollow with white color inside. |

Large, fleshy up to
150mm Dark red, lubricous to vicid. Bellformed to applanate often with a broad umbo. |
Distant, narrow adnate. Cinnamon buff to to brownish red. Yellowish edge. |
Thick up to 150mm Dry, orange to reddish. Cylindrical with characteristic fibrillose surface. med kraftig og karakteristisk fibret overflate. White at end and inside, not hollow. |
H. coccinea but it has adnate gills. H. splendidissima but it has a dry cap. None of those have a fibrillose stem like H. punicea. |

Ecology/Indicatorvalue: H. punicea is relatively common but often grown in areas of high natural value together with other rare grasslandfungi.
Fructification in Norway: From medio July to end of December, mainly in September/October. |
