Hodophilus foetens can look like a waxcap with its thick distant gills. It is a relatively small fungus often difficult to spot. They often grow together in clusters. The cap is up to 25mm, brown and often bell-shaped. The stem is thin often bent and up to 50mm long.

C. foetens is easily recognizable by its characteristic smell, which is strongly unpleasant. It can be difficult to get the smell off your fingers after touching it. It therefore carries its name correct.

The spores are small, approx. 5 x 5 µm, inflated round to ellipsoid and differs from the spores of waxcaps.

The genus Hodophilus belongs actually to the family Calvariacea.

Ecology/Indicatorvalue

All finds of C. foetens in SW-Norway have been made in calcareous locations.  It does not fructify every year and it can take up to five years from you find it until it appears again. It grows on not-fertilized grasslands together with other rare grasslandfungi, and are therefore a good indicator for valuable grasslands.

It is relatively rare and found only on a few locations in Norway.

Fructification in Norway: From medio August to beginning of November,  mainly in September/October.
