(Hygrocybe phaeococcinea) (Arnolds) Bon

Hygrocybe phaeococcinea is a medium-sized waxcap with dry red cap and with a clear dark coating in the center towards the edge.

Characteristics

Cap	Gills	Stipe	Similar species
Relatively small, up to 25 mm. Red and dry. Black cover. Conical to applante, often with depressed center and yellow edge.	Broadly adnate to decurrent. Characteristic red, salmon-red tinge.	Thin, up to 5mm. Cylindrical, dry, smooth and matt, reddish sometimes with silky sheen. Sometimes compressed and curved.	The dark cover is special. H. coccinea, but it has lubricouse cap and paler gills.

Ecology/Indicatorvalue:

H. phaeococcinea is not among the most common waxcaps, and is often found in pastures with a number of other rare grasslandfungi. It is probably a good indicator for species-rich localities. It grows both on calcareous and medium calcareous areas.

Fructification in Norway: From medio August to end of October, mainly in September.
